Your Love Never Fails – Song Set-Up

adminWorship Blog

Often times I’ll do a little study based on a song that is included in a worship set. For some people it can shed new light on why we sing a certain lyric. It’s important for a congregation to understand the truth behind the songs so that they can apply these truths to their own lives. A song can have any number of great truths from the scriptures and so I’ll usually focus on one or two and relate them back to a common theme.

There are two truths that I’d like to highlight within this song and they are linked.

1. We live in a constant tension between our flesh and our spirit, often doing things that we know to be wrong and later regret.

(despite that tension and the struggle it causes)

2. Nothing will separate us from the love of christ.

Part of of the human condition is that there is always a battle between the spirit and the flesh. The wickedness of our flesh constantly gets in the way of our spirit which delights in God, and wants to pursue the things of God.

The apostle Paul knew this very well and he struggled with it himself. He writes in Romans 7; “I do the things that I don’t want to do, and the good things that I want to do, I don’t do them”.

We experience this tension often, for some of us it occurs every day!! It shows up in those times when you are feeling like you can’t ever get close enough to God. When you feel like nothing you are doing is good enough. When you’ve neglected quiet time with God, when you “give in” to sin, when you’ve messed up. The list goes on and it can be easy to get discouraged and give up.

But a little bit later in Romans Paul says this “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

This verse is crucial because as we struggle with our sinful natures and we are convicted by the Holy Spirit, God doesn’t want us to get discouraged, upset and give up. He doesn’t want us to feel like we have “failed Him” and are no longer worthy of His affection and relationship. In the midst of these struggles we need to understand that God is working to make us over in Christ’s image. As we are convicted, and step into repentance, God is transforming us from the inside out. The truth is that with God on our side, remolding and re-shaping us, nothing – not satan, not our sins, not our mistakes, will ever separate us from the love of Christ. It’s why Jesus went to the cross and died for our sins. To reconcile us back into relationship with our loving Heavenly Father.

During the bridge of this song we sing out “You Make all things work together for my good”. This is something we need to sing it out in victory because we are no longer slaves to sin, we are clothed in the righteousness of Christ. We are sons and daughters of the most high, justified and reconciled unto Him.

See the Song Lyrics Below
Nothing can separate

Even if I ran away
Your love never fails

I know I still make mistakes
But You have new mercies for me everyday
Your love never fails

You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There maybe pain in the night but joy comes in the morning

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me

Your love never fails

The wind is strong and the water’s deep
But I’m not alone in these open seas
Cause Your love never fails

The chasm is far too wide
I never thought I’d reach the other side
But Your love never fails

You make, all things, work together for my good.
